Things You Need to Know About Uçhisar Castle
Uçhisar Cappadocia is a region that stands at the highest point of the region. If you want to see the Cappadocia and enjoyed the hot air balloon tour already, however you want to see the scenery one more time but this time from the land, then the place where you should turn your route must be the famous castle!
In the 17th century B.C., Cappadocia was dominated by the Roman Empire and the monasteries, churches, and cellars; which were built as the works of Christian priests and monks. One of those artworks was Uçhisar Castle. The buildings that have survived since the Byzantine period have been used for defense and asylum.
As the time progressed, the Turks continued to use Cappadocia as an important center when they came to Anatolia as large groups. The population, especially concentrated in Uchisar, was used as a center of protection and refuge in the small kingdoms, Seljuk and Ottoman periods. Uchisar region was passed to Turks during the period of Beyazıt the Second, and from the time of the first population census of 1530 until the 1960s, the Uçhisar population consisted of 3000 people and continued to increase.
It is a very strategic area because it was an ideal place to watch the roads where Seljuks used the Silk Road and the Persians used the King’s Way. Here, as in the underground cities, there are hidden roads, rooms, cellars, tunnels, shelters and even graves in the castle. Located about 7 kilometers from the city center, Uchisar Castle reminds us how important it is with its history.
Of course, certain parts of Uçhisar Castle have been destroyed, as all of the constructions have a burnout point, but everyone who goes to visit the still-standing sections has the chance to see the difficulties, wars and mysterious events that took place in the past.
To reach the stairs outside the castle, first, you have to pass through a few caves and tunnels. It is not hard to imagine what kind of view the region has dominated, even if you are not even close to the top yet! In addition to hundreds of fairy chimneys at different altitudes, Uchisar Castle is located on a hill with a height of 1350 meters.
When a castle is mentioned, almost everybody dreams of huge buildings surrounded by defense walls. However, here the place that welcomes visitors has a fragmented, hole-like appearance.
