Briefing

  • Myra Ancient City: Myra was one of the most powerful cities in the ancient Lycian League, and its cliff face tells that story plainly through an extraordinary row of tomb facades carved directly into the rock. The Roman theater below them is remarkably well-preserved, still showing tiered seating, stage architecture, and decorative reliefs that give a vivid sense of civic life two thousand years ago. Together the tombs and theater make Myra the strongest single archaeological statement on this section of coast.

  • Demre Ancient City: Demre occupies the site of ancient Myra's lower settlement, and walking through it brings a different layer of continuity to the day, from Lycian and Roman foundations up through Byzantine Christian use of the same urban space. The town itself is quiet and unhurried, allowing the guide to draw connections between ancient Myra and the Christian community that later transformed it. This stop makes the route read as a living historical continuum rather than a series of isolated monuments.

  • Church of St. Nicholas: This is the actual basilica where Nicholas of Myra, the 4th-century bishop whose generosity became the foundation of the Santa Claus legend, served and was buried. The church survived multiple earthquakes and centuries of changing rulers, and significant sections of the original mosaic floor, frescoes, and stone sarcophagus remain visible today. For travelers with any interest in the history of Christian traditions, this is one of the most direct connections to that story anywhere in the world.

  • Kekova Sunken City: A sequence of earthquakes in the 2nd century AD pushed part of an ancient Lycian settlement below the waterline, and the clear, shallow Mediterranean has preserved it remarkably well in the centuries since. From the boat you can see the outlines of rooftops, staircases, and building walls still sitting just beneath the surface, a genuinely surreal image that photographs cannot fully prepare you for. Kekova is a protected archaeological zone, so the boat passes close without anchoring, keeping the view undisturbed and pristine.

  • Relaxed Boat Tour: After passing Kekova the boat continues along a quieter stretch of coastline where small coves, pine-covered hillsides, and the occasional fishing village replace the archaeological focus with pure scenery. This is the part of the day where pace slows naturally and the Mediterranean light does most of the work. Most guests find it the most photogenic hour of the excursion, and on calm days the water clarity makes the entire bay look like a painting.

  1. Afternoon - Boat cruise around Kekova.

After the historical visits and lunch, the program continues from the harbor for the Kekova coastline cruise.

  2. 19:00 - Return transfer to Antalya.

At the end of the cruise, you drive back to Antalya and return to your hotel in the evening.

Tour Overview

Why the Kekova & St. Nicholas Day Trip Deserves Your Full Day

  • See ruins from two directions, Myra's dramatic cliff tombs are viewed from below, while Kekova's sunken city is seen from above the water, giving the day a genuinely different visual rhythm.
  • The St. Nicholas connection is authentic, the church in Demre is the actual basilica where Nicholas of Myra ministered, not a replica or museum reconstruction.
  • Kekova changes everything, the boat section reveals rooftop arches and stairways still visible beneath the clear Mediterranean, creating a scene you cannot replicate on land.
  • Logistics are fully covered, Antalya hotel pickup, air-conditioned transport, licensed guide, lunch, boat ticket, and entrance fees leave nothing to figure out yourself.
  • The seasonal window is ideal, running April through October, the route benefits from calm seas and long daylight hours that make the boat section genuinely rewarding.

If you want to keep exploring the region, the Perge, Aspendos and Side Tour in Antalya covers a second strong ancient route, while the Antalya to Kusadasi via Pamukkale tour extends your journey toward the cotton terraces and the Aegean coast.

Kekova ruins under the water were surreal. You look over the side of the boat and theres actual buildings down there, doorways and steps still visible through the clear Mediterranean. Myra's cliff tombs were impressive too. The St Nicholas church in Demre was smaller than expected but cool knowing its the real thing. Early start from Antalya around 6:30am, back by 7pm. Lunch included.
