Tour Overview

Cappadocia has two faces most 2-day packages from Istanbul never show together. The Red Tour covers the north plateau's dense fairy chimney formations, while the Cappadocia Green Tour descends south into Ihlara Valley gorge and an underground city. Both run on consecutive days, with flights and a cave or stone hotel night included.

Cappadocia Red Tour RouteExpand briefing

Devrent Valley (Pink Valley) → Pasabag Open Air Museum → Avanos Pottery Workshop → Goreme Panoramic View → Zelve Open Air Museum → Uchisar Castle (exterior view)

Briefing

  • Devrent Valley (Pink Valley): Millions of years of volcanic ash and water shaped Devrent Valley into one of Cappadocia's most surreal open-air landscapes.

  • Pasabag Open Air Museum: Walk right up to Pasabag's famous three-headed chimney and look for the carved doorway near the base, a real monk cell you can peer into.

  • Avanos Pottery Workshop: Pottery-making in Avanos is not a tourist performance but a genuine living tradition, practiced daily by workshops that supply artisans across Turkey.

  • Goreme Panoramic View: Hot air balloons launch from Goreme valley before sunrise, and the Panoramic View is where you can still spot them drifting above the chimneys.

  • Zelve Open Air Museum: Zelve was inhabited continuously from early Byzantine times through the twentieth century, making it one of Cappadocia's longest-lived cave settlements.

  • Uchisar Castle (exterior view): Stand at the Uchisar viewing terrace with the castle rock directly behind you for one of the most recognizable backdrop shots in all of Cappadocia.

  1. 17:00 - Transfer to your hotel in Cappadocia.

After the Red Tour ends, you are transferred to your cave or stone hotel in Cappadocia for the night.

Cappadocia Green Tour RouteExpand briefing

Esentepe Panorama Point → Derinkuyu Underground City or Kaymakli Underground City → Ihlara Valley → Belisirma Village → Yaprakhisar Panorama

Briefing

  • Esentepe Panorama Point: Esentepe opens the Green Tour with a broad elevated panorama that shows the transition from the north plateau's concentrated fairy chimney formations to the wider, calmer volcanic landscape of south and central Cappadocia. The viewpoint sits above a farming valley, and the view toward the Ihlara direction shows a different scale of terrain: longer ridgelines, fewer concentrated formations, more open distance. It is a useful first stop that helps travelers calibrate their expectations for the Green Tour's more varied and geologically complex itinerary.

  • Derinkuyu Underground City or Kaymakli Underground City: The underground city, either Derinkuyu or Kaymakli, assigned based on availability, is the Green Tour's most structurally remarkable stop: a multi-floor carved rock network designed to shelter entire communities underground for extended periods during raids. The engineering covers ventilation shafts drawing air from the surface, stable water sources, food storage at cooler lower levels, and circular stone doors that could seal individual sections from inside. Moving through the narrow, low-ceilinged passages across multiple floors gives a physical understanding of the scale that descriptions cannot fully convey.

  • Ihlara Valley: Ihlara Valley is the landscape that most differentiates the Green Tour from the plateau-based north circuits, a volcanic canyon carved by the Melendiz River, with cliff faces rising steeply on both sides and Byzantine rock-cut churches tucked into the walls at regular intervals. The tour walks a section of the valley floor, passing several churches with intact fresco decoration before arriving at Belisirma village for lunch. The canyon light, river sound, and enclosed vertical scale make Ihlara the most distinctly different environment in the full two-day program.

  • Belisirma Village: Belisirma sits at the bottom of the Ihlara Valley canyon, clustered around a stretch where the Melendiz River widens enough to accommodate riverside restaurant platforms extending over the water. Lunch here takes place at tables built on platforms above the river current, with the canyon walls rising behind the buildings and the sound of the water constant throughout the meal. The village has been a settlement since Byzantine times, and cave dwellings cut into the cliff above the modern buildings are visible from the riverside lunch tables.

  • Yaprakhisar Panorama: Yaprakhisar closes the Green Tour with a view that is rougher and more cinematic than the north circuit panoramas, the volcanic rock here has eroded into dramatic isolated towers and cliff formations that resemble a compressed mountain landscape rather than a plateau surface. On clear days the panoramic view looks across the southern Cappadocia margin toward the Taurus mountain range in the distance, giving a sense of the full geographic scale of the region. It is the final stop before the airport transfer and serves as the last outdoor photography point of the two-day program.

  1. 17:00 - Transfer to the airport after the Green Tour.

When the Green Tour ends, you are transferred to Kayseri or Nevsehir Airport for the evening flight back to Istanbul.

  2. 21:45 - Flight from Cappadocia to Istanbul.

Evening domestic flight from Cappadocia back to Istanbul.

    Flight time may change.

    • 23:00 - Arrival in Istanbul.

After landing in Istanbul, your transfer team meets you at the airport.

Arrival airport and time may change according to availability.

  3. After arrival - Transfer back to your hotel in Istanbul.

You are transferred from the airport to your hotel in Istanbul, where the package ends.

Ihlara Valley hike was the standout of the entire Cappadocia trip. Walking through that deep canyon with the river next to you and ancient churches carved into the cliffsides is surreal. The Red Tour on day 1 was great for the classic fairy chimney photos but day 2 with the Green Tour felt like a real adventure. Derinkuyu underground city was also fascinating, going down 8 levels underground. Lunch at the riverside restaurant in Belisirma was perfect.
