Goreme and North Cappadocia Tour RouteExpand briefing

Devrent Valley → Pasabag → Avanos Pottery Workshop → Goreme Open-Air Museum → Uchisar Kalealti → Goreme Panorama

Briefing

  • Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley): Devrent Valley (also called Pink Valley) has no carved interiors or visitor facilities, just raw tuff columns shaped by rain and wind over millions of years. Each formation is named after the animal it most resembles: a seated camel, a dolphin, a seal. Your guide will point out the famous shapes and explain how the two-layer volcanic rock creates these distinctive top-heavy silhouettes.

  • Pasabag (Monks Valley): Pasabag contains some of Cappadocia's tallest fairy chimneys, and the reason early Christian monks settled here rather than in the lower valleys is practical: the height gave them isolation from road traffic and casual visitors. Cells carved into the tops of these mushroom-shaped pillars could only be reached by rope ladder, which the monk would pull up behind him. The triple-headed chimney near the entrance is the most photographed formation in the valley.

  • Avanos Pottery Workshop: The Kizilirmak River, Turkey's longest river, runs through Avanos and deposits a distinct red clay along its banks, the same clay that pottery workshops here have been using for roughly 8,000 years. At the workshop, a master potter throws a piece on a foot-operated wheel in front of the group, demonstrating control that takes years to develop. Visitors can try the wheel themselves, and finished pieces can be purchased or shipped home.

  • Goreme Open-Air Museum: Goreme Open-Air Museum is a cluster of rock-cut churches, chapels, and monasteries carved into the volcanic cones of the Goreme valley between the 10th and 13th centuries. The interiors are decorated with Byzantine frescoes in shades of ochre, blue, and red, remarkable because the cave rock absorbed and preserved the pigments directly into the stone surface. The Dark Church, the most vividly colored example, requires a separate entrance fee but rewards close inspection of its complete New Testament fresco cycle.

  • Uchisar Kalealti (Below the Castle): Uchisar Kalealti refers to the village and rock face directly below Uchisar Castle, the highest natural rock formation in Cappadocia. From this viewpoint you see the full scale of the castle's honeycomb of carved windows and doorways without the climb to the summit, making it accessible for every member of the group. The narrow village street at the base has local shops and cafes where you can pick up water before the next stop.

  • Goreme Panorama and Evil Eye Tree: The Goreme Panorama viewpoint sits on a ridge above the valley and gives the clearest single view of how the Goreme canyon system is laid out: rose-tinted rock cones, orchard terraces, and the white facades of cave or stone hotels below. A large tree near the viewpoint has been wrapped in hundreds of traditional blue glass evil eye charms (nazar boncugu) by visitors and locals over many years, making it one of the most distinctive photography spots in the region. The midday light at this elevation produces strong contrast across the valley floor.

  1. 17:00 - Transfer to your cave or stone hotel.

Your driver takes the group directly from the last stop to the hotel in Cappadocia.

Ihlara Valley and South Cappadocia Tour RouteExpand briefing

Esentepe Panorama → Derinkuyu Underground City → Ihlara Valley (3 km) → Belisirma Village → Pigeon Valley

Briefing

  • Esentepe Panorama: The day begins at Esentepe, a volcanic hill that rises above the Ihlara plateau and offers a clear 360-degree view over southern Cappadocia. From this elevation you can trace the line where the Ihlara gorge cuts across the plateau below, which gives you a useful sense of scale before you descend into the canyon. The stop takes about 10 to 15 minutes, mostly for photos.

  • Derinkuyu Underground City: Derinkuyu is the deepest underground settlement open to visitors in Cappadocia, extending roughly 55 metres below ground across 18 levels, of which the top eight are accessible. The engineering is built entirely around defense: narrow corridors force any attacker into single file, circular stone doors seal each level from the inside, and a 55-metre-deep ventilation shaft runs to the surface for air. The city is thought to have sheltered up to 20,000 people during Arab raids in the 7th and 8th centuries.

  • Ihlara Valley (3 km Gorge Hike): Ihlara Valley is a 14-kilometre gorge carved by the Melendiz River through the Cappadocian plateau, and your group walks approximately 3 kilometres of the canyon floor. The cliffs rise between 100 and 150 metres on both sides, with Byzantine cave churches carved into the lower cliff walls, most contain faded but legible frescoes from the 9th to 13th centuries. The path stays flat, follows the river closely, and is shaded for much of the route, making it the coolest midday activity in the Cappadocia program.

  • Belisirma Village (Lunch Stop): Belisirma is a small village at the bottom of Ihlara Valley where restaurant platforms are built directly over the Melendiz River, tables sit on wooden decks above the water, cooled by the canyon air. Lunch here typically includes local mezes, grilled meat, and ayran, the cold yogurt drink common across central Turkey. The riverside setting is unusual enough that most guests remember this stop as one of the highlights of the whole trip.

  • Pigeon Valley: Pigeon Valley (Guvercin Vadisi) runs between Uchisar and Goreme and takes its name from the thousands of small carved niches lining the valley walls, these were functional pigeon houses built over centuries to collect droppings as agricultural fertiliser. The valley floor path offers close-up views of the dove-cote holes, many still occupied by wild pigeons, and a final angle on the Uchisar rock formation before the group transfers to the airport. It is the last scenic stop of the tour.

  1. 17:00 - Transfer to Nevsehir or Kayseri airport.

Your driver takes the group from Pigeon Valley directly to the departure airport.

  2. 21:45 - Flight from Cappadocia to Istanbul.

Board the evening flight back to Istanbul.

    Flight time may change.

    • 23:00 - Arrival in Istanbul.

Your driver meets you at the airport and transfers you to your hotel.

Arrival airport and time may change according to availability.

Tour Overview

Why Goreme and Ihlara Together Beat a Standard Cappadocia Package

  • Two distinct landscapes: Goreme's volcanic cone formations and Ihlara's river canyon are completely different terrain, most 2-day packages from Istanbul cover only one of them.
  • Flight and hotel included: Round-trip domestic flights replace the 11-hour overnight bus, and a night in a cave or stone hotel is part of the package.
  • Underground city visit: Derinkuyu goes 55 metres below the surface, the best-preserved underground settlement in Cappadocia, cool even in midsummer.
  • Riverside lunch in a canyon: Your Day 2 lunch is served at a restaurant in Belisirma Village, with tables built over the Melendiz River at the bottom of Ihlara gorge.
  • Goreme Open-Air Museum access: Enter Byzantine cave churches with 10th-century frescoes still intact inside the volcanic rock.

Whether you have two days or want to plan further ahead, our 3-day Cappadocia tour from Istanbul extends the program with the Yellow Tour route.

Belisirma lunch over the river inside the canyon. Tables on wooden platforms with the water flowing underneath. One of the most unique lunch spots I have ever been to. The whole Ihlara Valley hike was amazing. And Derinkuyu going underground 8 floors was intense. Great combination with the Goreme churches from day 1. Different from the usual Cappadocia tour.
