Tour Overview

Southern Cappadocia tells a different story than the famous northern valleys. The Cappadocia Yellow Tour traces layers of ancient history through Red Valley, Rose Valley, the rock-cut basilica at Cavusin, and a deep underground city where early Christians hid entire communities beneath the earth. One guided day, thousands of years of human endurance.

Red Valley → Rose Valley (Gulludere Valley) → Cavusin Village → Pigeon Valley → Underground City

Briefing

  • Red Valley: Walking Red Valley's trail from end to end takes roughly 45 minutes and delivers a completely different view at every bend.

  • Rose Valley (Gulludere Valley): A quiet reverence lingers inside Rose Valley's carved chapels, where worn stone floors and painted walls tell stories of faith carved into cliffs.

  • Cavusin Village: While Goreme gets most visitors, Cavusin offers a quieter and more unfiltered look at how Cappadocians actually carved and occupied cliff dwellings.

  • Pigeon Valley: Inside Pigeon Valley's canyon, the sound of wind moving through carved rock openings creates a low, hollow note that echoes between the cliff walls.

  • Underground City: A carved chapel located deep inside Cappadocia's underground city confirms that faith remained central to community life even during dangerous periods of concealment.

  1. 17:00 - Transfer back to your hotel.

After the Yellow Tour ends, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Cappadocia.

Tour Overview

Which Ancient Secrets Does This Tour Uncover?

  • Red Valley's painted cave churches preserve 10th-century frescoes hidden inside volcanic rock, evidence of a thriving monastic community that most guidebooks barely mention.
  • Rose Valley's carved hermit cells reveal how Byzantine monks chose isolation inside narrow tuff corridors, leaving devotional art scratched into walls that survive to this day.
  • Cavusin's Saint John the Baptist Church ranks among Cappadocia's oldest rock-cut basilicas, its massive columns and faded murals dating back over 1,000 years of continuous worship.
  • Pigeon Valley's cliff dovecotes tell a quieter agricultural story, villagers carved thousands of pigeon nests into the rock to collect fertilizer that sustained their crops for centuries.
  • The underground city drops you into defensive tunnels and storage halls where entire populations hid during Arab raids, a survival strategy repeated across Cappadocia for over a millennium.

Walk where ancient civilizations carved their survival into stone. Pair this history-rich route with the Cappadocia Red Tour for the geological north, or see the fairy chimneys from above with a Cappadocia hot air balloon flight.

Rose Valley blew my mind. The layers of pink and orange rock go on forever and depending on the time of day the colors shift completely. We were there around mid morning and it was perfect lighting for photos. Red Valley right after was even more dramatic with deeper reds and sharper formations. Cavusin village felt like stepping into an abandonned movie set carved into stone. The underground city at the end was the icing on top, dark narrow tunnels that go multiple levels deep. Way better than I expected tbh.

Did the Red Tour yesterday and Yellow Tour today. Yellow wins for me. The valleys have more color and the underground city was more interesting than Zelve. Rose Valley is genuinely one of the prettiest places I have been anywhere in the world. Pigeon Valley had nice views too. Our guide Emre explained the geology behind all the different rock colors which made it even more interesting.
