Tour Overview

Eastern Turkey's most extraordinary ancient sites and the Aegean's greatest classical ruins rarely share one itinerary. A 7-day Turkey tour from Istanbul connects the colossal summit statues of Mount Nemrut, the 12,000-year-old temple at Gobeklitepe, the marble colonnades of Ephesus, and Pamukkale's thermal terraces in a single east-meets-west route.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 ─

Fly to Adiyaman, Nemrut & Drive to Sanliurfa

Meal: Lunch

05:00 - Pick up from your hotel and transfer to the airport. (Pickup time and airport may change.)

09:30 - Flight from Istanbul to Adiyaman. (Flight time may change.)

11:00 - Arrival in Adiyaman and meet your local guide. (Arrival airport and time may change according to availability.)

  • Karakus Tumulus: The Karakus royal burial mound stands on the Commagene plain with carved columns and eagle statues that introduce the region's theatrical approach to royal commemoration. It is a strong appetizer for Mount Nemrut before the mountain itself appears.
  • Arsameia and Cendere Bridge: Arsameia was the summer capital of the Commagene kingdom, with rock-cut reliefs and an underground passage that lead up to a spectacular hilltop view. The Roman bridge at Cendere, still intact after 1,800 years, adds a second civilizational layer to the afternoon.
  • Mount Nemrut: King Antiochus I built his sanctuary on this 2,150-metre summit as an act of supreme royal self-identification with the gods. The colossal stone heads of Zeus, Apollo, Tyche, Heracles, and Antiochus himself, some toppled, some still standing, create one of the most theatrical archaeological settings in the world.

Transfer to your hotel in Sanliurfa after the mountain route.

Overnight stay in Sanliurfa.

Day 2 ─

Gobeklitepe, Sanliurfa Museum & Old Town

Meal: Breakfast & Lunch

09:00 - After breakfast, check out from the hotel and depart for Gobeklitepe.

  • Gobeklitepe Archaeological Site: Built around 10,000 BC, six thousand years before Stonehenge and seven thousand before the Great Pyramid, Gobeklitepe is the oldest known complex of ritual architecture on earth. The T-shaped limestone pillars, some standing six metres tall, were carved and assembled by hunter-gatherers whose sophistication has rewritten the standard account of early human civilization.
  • Sanliurfa Archaeology Museum: The museum holds the Urfa Man, a three-metre carved basalt figure dating to around 9000 BC and the oldest known life-size human statue. The collection contextualizes both Gobeklitepe and the broader Neolithic revolution in upper Mesopotamia in a way the site alone cannot.
  • Haleplibahce Mosaic Museum: Visit the museum known for the Amazon mosaics and Roman-era floor panels discovered in Sanliurfa. The collection adds a vivid late-antique layer to the city before the old town visit.
  • Balikligol and Old Town: Balikligol, the Pool of Abraham, is one of the holiest sites in Islamic tradition, the place where Abraham was thrown into a fire by Nimrod and the flames turned to water. The sacred carp that fill the pool are considered untouchable, and the surrounding mosque courtyards create one of the most genuinely atmospheric spaces in the entire country.

17:00 - Transfer back to your hotel in Sanliurfa.

Overnight stay in Sanliurfa.

Day 3 ─

Day 4 ─

Full Day Ephesus, Virgin Mary & Temple of Artemis

Meal: Breakfast & Lunch

08:45 - After breakfast, transfer from your hotel to the Ephesus tour area.

  • Ephesus Ancient City: Ephesus rewards slow walkers, the more time you spend examining the details, the more the ancient city gives back. Running water channels built into the marble sidewalks reveal how advanced Roman engineering was in this part of Turkey. Between the grand facades and the carved street furniture, every few meters brings something new worth photographing.
  • House of Virgin Mary: Pilgrims have climbed Bulbul Mountain to visit this site since the 19th century, when a German nun's vision led to the rediscovery of the small stone house where Mary is believed to have lived. Three different popes have visited in person, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis, giving the site a recognition that spans both Catholic and Orthodox traditions. Standing at the altar, that long history of veneration becomes tangible.
  • Temple of Artemis: Coins minted in Ephesus during the Roman era depicted the Temple of Artemis on their face, reflecting how central the structure was to the city's identity and economy. Pilgrims came from across the Mediterranean to worship at the sanctuary, and the temple complex included treasuries, altars, and accommodation for visitors at a scale that rivaled modern religious sites. Near Selcuk today, a single column marks where all of that once stood.

16:00 - Transfer back to your hotel after the tour.

Overnight stay in Kusadasi/Selcuk.

Day 5 ─

Pamukkale Terraces, Hierapolis & Cleopatra Pool

Meal: Breakfast & Lunch

07:30 - Early departure from your hotel and drive to Pamukkale.

  • Pamukkale: Ancient Romans were the first to build seriously around Pamukkale's thermal springs, turning the hilltop into a thriving spa city. Below their city, warm mineral water continued to carve out the brilliant white travertine terraces that define the landscape today. This UNESCO World Heritage Site in Denizli province offers both the natural wonder and the historical layer in a single visit.
  • White Calcium Terraces: Thermal water carrying dissolved calcium carbonate has been overflowing this hillside since before the Romans built their city above it. Each time the water flows and cools, it deposits another paper-thin layer of white travertine. Multiply that by two thousand years and you get the extraordinary cascading terraces that make Pamukkale one of Turkey's most recognizable natural landmarks.
  • Hierapolis Ancient City: Hierapolis in the 2nd century AD under Roman rule was a city of marble baths, paved roads, and well-organized public spaces. Its theater was rebuilt and enlarged during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, and the facade still carries carved panels depicting mythological scenes. Above Pamukkale's travertine terraces, the scale of Roman construction that survives on this hilltop continues to surprise visitors who arrive expecting smaller ruins.
  • Cleopatra Antique Thermal Pool: Thermal water sourced from Pamukkale's ancient springs keeps Cleopatra Antique Thermal Pool at a comfortable 36 degrees every day of the year. Beneath the surface, visitors can see and touch original Roman marble columns that fell into the pool during a historical earthquake. Swimming here is optional and not included in the tour price, you pay at the poolside entrance separately if you decide to take a dip.

16:00 - Transfer back to Kusadasi/Selcuk after the Pamukkale route.

Overnight stay in Kusadasi/Selcuk.

Day 6 ─

Tour Overview

What the East Meets West Framing Actually Delivers

  • Gobeklitepe resets the timeline completely, 12,000 years old, predating pottery and agriculture, and still reshaping what archaeologists thought they knew about early human society.
  • Mount Nemrut delivers spectacle with colossal stone heads of gods and kings arranged on a 2,150-metre summit, built by a minor king who wanted to rank among the immortals.
  • Sanliurfa provides the cultural depth to anchor the eastern section: a pilgrimage city, an archaeology museum with the oldest known life-size human statue, and the sacred fish pools of Abraham.
  • Ephesus and Pamukkale complete the west so the route never feels like it favors one region over another.
  • Domestic flights handle the distances that would otherwise require three days of overland travel.

Gobeklitepe changed how I think about human history. Standing at a site thats 12,000 years old, older than Stonehenge by thousands of years, it just hits different. And then Mount Nemrut at sunset with those massive stone heads against the sky at over 2000 meters altitude. Unbelievable. The second half of the trip shifted to Ephesus and Pamukkale which are more classic Turkey tourism but still amazing. Library of Celsus, walking on the white terraces barefoot. Seven days felt right for this route, not too rushed. Flights between regions saved alot of time. Guide Ali in the eastern Turkey section was super passionate about the archaeology. Honestly this tour felt like two trips in one, ancient east and classical west.
