Tour Overview

Before the pyramids, before Stonehenge, Gobeklitepe was already standing. A 5-day tour from Istanbul takes you to the 12,000-year-old temple that rewrote archaeology, up to the colossal summit statues of Mount Nemrut, and west into Cappadocia's fairy chimney valleys for two full touring days. Southeast Turkey and central Anatolia in one route.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 ─

Fly to Adiyaman & Nemrut Sunset Tour

Meal: Lunch

06:15 AM - Our team will pick you up from your hotel in Istanbul and transfer you to the airport. (Pickup time and airport may change.)

09:45 - Flight from Istanbul to Adiyaman. (Flight time may change.)

11:25 - Arrival in Adiyaman and airport meet-up. (Arrival airport and time may change according to availability.)

Transfer to a local restaurant in Adiyaman before the regional tour begins.

  • Cendere Bridge: This Roman bridge from the second century AD crosses the Cendere River on a single arch that has carried traffic for nearly two thousand years. It opens the southeast route with a quiet but impressive piece of engineering well before the summit drama begins.
  • Arsemia Ancient City: Arsemia was the summer capital of the Commagene kingdom and contains relief carvings, inscriptions, and a tunnel that give the Nemrut visit its essential backstory. Without it, the summit statues lose much of their narrative context.
  • Karakus Tumulus: The Karakus burial mound belongs to the same Commagene royal family as Nemrut and marks a quieter dynastic moment in the highlands. Its columns and open setting prepare the route well for the final climb to the summit.
  • Mount Nemrut: At 2,134 metres, the summit terrace of Mount Nemrut holds the colossal carved heads of gods and the king Antiochus I, assembled as a sanctuary designed to last into eternity. Watching the sunset fade over these ancient faces is the definitive image of this entire eastern Turkey tour.

After the sunset visit, transfer to your hotel in Sanliurfa. The drive takes about 2 hours. (Sunset at Mount Nemrut may not be possible due to weather or seasonal conditions; the sunset visit will be arranged according to availability.)

Overnight stay in Sanliurfa.

Day 2 ─

Gobeklitepe, Sanliurfa & Drive to Cappadocia

Meal: Breakfast & Lunch

08:30 - Pick up from your hotel in Sanliurfa.

  • Gobeklitepe: Gobeklitepe's circular enclosures of carved T-shaped pillars were assembled by a hunter-gatherer society around 10,000 BCE, nearly 6,000 years before Stonehenge. Visiting this UNESCO World Heritage site rewrites the visitor's understanding of when organized human society began.
  • Sanliurfa Mosaic Museum: This museum holds one of the world's largest collections of Roman mosaics from the Commagene and Seleucid periods, giving the southeast tour a strong artistic dimension after the prehistoric site. The scale of the collection surprises most visitors.
  • Sanliurfa Archaeology Museum: The archaeology museum provides the chronological framework needed to understand how Gobeklitepe fits into the broader history of this exceptionally layered region. It helps the full southeast section make coherent historical sense.
  • Pool of Abraham: This sacred pool in the heart of Sanliurfa's old city is tied to the prophet Ibrahim and continues to draw pilgrims from across the Muslim world today. The shift from prehistoric archaeology to living faith gives Day 2 one of the most emotionally varied day-arc sequences in the tour.

After the tour, drive to Cappadocia. The journey takes about 5 hours.

Day 4 ─

Cappadocia Red Tour (North Valleys)

Meal: Breakfast & Lunch

09:30 - Pick up from your hotel in Cappadocia.

Transfer to the north Cappadocia touring area.

  • Devrent Valley (Pink Valley): Devrent Valley formed when layers of compressed volcanic ash from Mount Erciyes and Hasan eroded at different rates, leaving behind columns of harder rock surrounded by softer soil. Over millions of years, those columns took on shapes that human imagination has always found irresistible.
  • Pasabag Open Air Museum: Children visiting Pasabag are typically most engaged at this stop, because the scale of the fairy chimneys and the idea of people actually living inside them fires the imagination immediately. Guides often explain monk life through simple comparisons that resonate with younger visitors.
  • Avanos Pottery Workshop: Every Avanos pottery demonstration includes an explanation of clay preparation, covering the mixing, kneading, and aging that happen before any throwing begins. That preparation takes days, and understanding it changes how you perceive the finished piece sitting on the showroom shelf.
  • Goreme Panoramic View: From Goreme Panoramic View, the entire fairy chimney valley spreads below in a single wide frame, with Uchisar Castle visible on the horizon and hundreds of rock formations filling the middle distance. No other point on the Red Tour route delivers this kind of spatial overview.
  • Zelve Open Air Museum: Inside Zelve's cave rooms, the volcanic tuff walls maintain a cool temperature even on the hottest summer days, which explains why cave living made practical sense for communities in Cappadocia's climate. That temperature difference is immediately noticeable when you step from sunlit path to carved interior.
  • Uchisar Castle (exterior view): Pigeon houses are among the most visible features of Uchisar Castle's exterior, carved into the rock face in large numbers at varying heights. Pigeons were economically important in Cappadocia for centuries, providing fertilizer for the volcanic soil's poor agricultural land, and Uchisar's density of pigeon houses reflects that importance.

17:00 - Transfer back to your hotel after the tour.

Overnight stay in Cappadocia.

Day 5 ─

Cappadocia Yellow Tour & Fly to Istanbul

Meal: Breakfast & Lunch

09:30 - Pick up from your hotel in Cappadocia after breakfast and check-out.

Transfer to the south Cappadocia touring area.

  • Red Valley: Early Christian settlers used Red Valley's natural rock formations as orientation points when traveling between cave settlements in ancient Cappadocia. Today the valley is valued primarily for its scenery, with sweeping views across orange ridgelines that extend toward the horizon in every direction.
  • Rose Valley (Gulludere Valley): Rose Valley marks the transition zone between the heavier volcanic formations of the Goreme plateau and the gentler limestone canyons extending toward the Avanos basin to the north. This geological boundary gives Gulludere Valley a layered visual quality, with different rock types producing contrasting textures and colors across the same canyon wall.
  • Cavusin Village: A carved cistern near the base of Cavusin's old village collected rainwater channeled from the cliff surface above, solving a critical water supply problem for a community living in porous volcanic rock. This infrastructure detail reveals the level of planning and engineering knowledge early Cavusin residents applied to the challenges of cliff habitation.
  • Pigeon Valley: Pigeon Valley's visual character is unlike any other canyon in Cappadocia, defined not by fairy chimneys or rock churches but by the sheer density of human intervention written into every meter of its cliff walls. More than any other single site on the Yellow Tour, Pigeon Valley shows how completely Cappadocia's landscape has been shaped by centuries of agricultural ingenuity.
  • Underground City: Cappadocia's underground cities remained in active use across multiple centuries and multiple periods of threat, from early Byzantine-era raids through subsequent invasions, with each generation adding new rooms to the existing carved network. Different construction techniques visible in different sections of the underground city allow researchers to distinguish older original chambers from later expansions.

17:00 - Transfer to Nevsehir or Kayseri Airport after the tour. (Departure airport may change according to availability.)

21:30 - Flight from Cappadocia to Istanbul. (Flight time may change.)

22:50 - Arrival in Istanbul. (Arrival airport and time may change according to availability.)

Transfer back to your hotel or central address in Istanbul.

Your 5-day package ends after the final transfer in Istanbul.

Tour Overview

The Ancient East Route, What Sets It Apart

  • World's oldest temple complex: Gobeklitepe's T-shaped pillars date to 10,000 BCE, predating agriculture itself. A licensed guide makes the significance readable in real time.
  • Sunset at Mount Nemrut: Watching the last light cross the colossal heads of the Commagene gods at 2,134 metres is one of the most photogenic moments in all of Turkish archaeology.
  • Southeast Turkey rarely paired with Cappadocia: Most packages skip the Adiyaman and Sanliurfa region entirely. This route gives it two full days, which is the minimum needed to do it justice.
  • Free Cappadocia day built in: The open day in Cappadocia gives you space to book an optional hot air balloon flight, ride horses at dawn, or simply explore at your own pace.
  • Both Cappadocia routes covered: Red Tour and Yellow Tour complete the week with north and south valley perspectives back-to-back.

For a deeper dive into the same ancient sites plus Ephesus and Pamukkale, our 7 Days Mount Nemrut, Gobeklitepe, Ephesus & Pamukkale Tour from Istanbul extends this journey by two days and adds the Aegean coast.
If you want a broader heritage experience across Turkey, our 6 Days Best of Turkey Heritage Tour is the best overview of the country's ancient past.

Nemrut at sunset is not something you can really describe. The stone heads sitting there for 2000 years, the mountains stretching in every direction, the light going golden then orange then pink. I sat on those rocks and just watched. Then the next morning Gobeklitepe which is 10000 years older than Nemrut. My brain could barely process that. The Cappadocia days after were like a reward for the intense eastern Turkey part.

The Commagene Kingdom is one of those things you never learn about in school but should. A small kingdom that mixed Greek and Persian culture and built a mountaintop sanctuary at 2150 meters. The stone heads are massive and the setting is unreal. Guide Hasan explained the whole dynasty in a way that was easy to follow. Arsemia and Cendere Bridge were bonus highlights I wasnt expecting. Then Gobeklitepe blew my mind the next day.
