It is an ancient city where the famous Iliad Epic is thought to have emerged from Homer’s pen. We know with the names of Troy, Troia or Trojan. In 1996, many of the pieces that were removed from the ancient city, which could only be inserted into the National Park status, are unfortunately distributed to Germany and Russia today. The ancient city is also on the World Heritage List since 1998. The Troy Ancient City is located in Çanakkale.
The exact location of the ancient city of Troy in the region visited by archaeologists and travelers since the 16th century could not be determined until the 1800s. First, in 1822, Irish journalist Charles Maclaren correctly identified the city and by the year 1865, the first archaeological research was conducted by Frank Calvert. In 1868, the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann started the first comprehensive excavations with the necessary permits. In the following years, excavations were continued by German and American archaeologists at intervals up to 1938. It is known that many historical monuments were abducted abroad. The excavations started in 1988 are still being carried out by archaeologists.
As a result of the excavations, 10 different city layers found in Troy. Due to its geographical location suitable for settlement, it has used as an urban habitat from 3,000 BC to 500 AD, and then it has been the Byzantine settlement from 12. century to 13. century. Due to the use of mudbrick as a building material, a hill formed on top of each other. Long-term excavations revealed more than 50 building levels in the region. In Troy between 700 and 85 BC, the Greeks identified between 85 and 500 AD, and the Byzantine settlement was found between 12 and 13 centuries. Having lost its importance due to the great political changes after the 13th century, Troy began to attract the attention of European intellectuals and scientists in the 17th century.
The legend of the Trojan War and the Trojan Horse has been wandering for centuries and proud of the Greek people. According to the legend, the Akhalis encompassed the city of Troy for nine years, but they could not take it. After many attacks, the famous and successful commander Odysseus thinks of making a wooden horse one day. With this cleverly made horse, the city of Troy conquered. The war region is located within the borders of the present-day Çanakkale. The Ministry of Culture decided in 1973 to have a replica of the horse. Since a wooden Trojan Horse, which was erected in the region representing the war, became devastated, Hollywood came to the region many years later and made the Troy legend a reality. The Hollywood production is on display at the seaside in the center of Çanakkale.
